Mark joined with the London Citizens at a school in Stepney Green this morning to support their CitySafe Campaign. London Citizens is an alliance of community organisations composed largely of faith groups including churches and mosques, student organisations and residents’ associations.
Over the last 18 months, 10 young people from London Citizens member groups have been murdered on the streets of the capital. The CitySafe campaign aims to build the power of local communities to tackle crime and the fear of crime. In particular, Mark was asked to support the introduction of CitySafe havens. This initiative encourages local shops to provide an area where young people can find help and protection if they are being hassled or followed on the street. The campaign also aims to build better relationships between schools, young people and the police and encourages the community to report anti-social behaviour and crime. London Citizens are also training CitySafe reps to be placed on the streets, outside schools and on buses to increase informal supervision.
