Today, after much speculation, the Prime Minister announced her intention to step down as leader of the Conservative Party on Friday 7 June.
It has been a privilege to be a member of her ministerial team, and I am immensely grateful to her for giving me the opportunity to join the Foreign and Commonwealth Office some two years ago.
Faced with the greatest political challenge of our time, the Prime Minister's ability to remain calm under unimaginable pressure has been a source of great admiration. Her extraordinary resilience and unwavering sense of public duty has been truly remarkable, and I hope that these often-overlooked qualities are well-remembered in time.
My hope now is that the our fractured Party is able to come together in the best interest of the country and to deliver as smooth and orderly a Brexit as possible.
